Disney+ returns to fortune tellers in pursuit of greater fortune. The streaming device is lit green House of Destinywhich is part of the successful Korean fortune teller competition series Battle of Fatesgiving its most interesting unscripted franchise a second life just months after the end of the original.
where Battle of Fates Pitting 49 shamans, tarot masters and fortune tellers against each other in elimination challenges, the new series gives fans the opportunity to take a supernatural pilgrimage. It was hosted by the three best Fate readers from the original – with appearances from other fan-favorite contestants – House of Destiny It will take participants from around the world on a tour of Korean destinations believed to possess spiritual power, complete with ceremonies, local traditions and personal readings, before being granted entry to the country’s shamanic rituals. The series comes from the same producer and writer Battle of Fates. A premiere date has not yet been set.
The original release was a launch for the Korean Disney+ slate this year. The 10-episode series premiered on February 11, bringing together practitioners of shamanism, tarot, face reading and… before — the traditional Korean art of determining fate from the date and hour of a person’s birth — and having them compete using everything from fans, bells and dowsing rods to notebooks and, allegedly, spirit guides. According to Disney statistics, the series has become the number one premiere ever on Disney+ Korea, based on the number of views within the first 12 days of release. And continue to displace supernatural drama Moving as the service’s most-watched title ever in the country, while also topping the charts in Taiwan and other Asian markets.
But the release was not without some bumps. The show briefly sparked backlash in Korea over an episode in which contestants speculated on the circumstances of a firefighter’s death, sparking criticism that the real tragedy had been turned into a reality TV spectacle. The controversy prompted Disney to make edits to the episode.
However, it looks like the series will become a huge unscripted regional franchise for Disney. Local adaptations Battle of Fates Under development in other areas, with House of Destiny Just the first show, with more to come. The show joins a growing list of unscripted Korean content alongside I am a boxer, Zone: Survival Mission and My name is Gabrielwhich includes Blackpink’s Jennie.
