Rounding out the writer-director duo of Ramla Ali and Richard A. Moore Productions in East London on their first feature film Not like usRomantic comedy starring Sabrina Elba and Ashley Thomas.
The film follows a single Somali mother who challenges her family and culture by falling in love with a Jamaican man. The official synopsis reads: Amina Hassan (Elba) is a forty-something pharmacist and single mother who has built it all on her own: her career, her reputation, her beautiful, controlled life, and she would like to keep it that way. Edmund Clarke (Thomas) has other ideas.
“What makes matters more complicated are the three aunts, Hawa, Safiya, and Maryam, who decide that what Amina needs is a husband. Not to mention, their marriage can be generously described as a work in progress. Not like us It is a story about love, desire, and the right to choose your happiness, told entirely from within the society it depicts. Sophia Oxenham also stars in the film.
Ali and Moore co-wrote and directed Not like us. The pair has direct contact with the substance. The couple married in 2016, and Moore, a white British man, converted to Islam. Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and grew up in east London. Ali is also a former Olympic boxer. Her life will be chronicled in the biographical film in the shadows, Which will be released in UK cinemas in October.
Not like us It was independently funded after what Ali and Moore described as the difficulties of working within the infrastructure of traditional British finance. Sunita Mirchandani Hyams and Luke Hyams of Pangea Group produced this film along with Andrew Conrad and Jenna Carter of 22 Summers, with Ali and Moore. The executive producer is Richard Fearne of Affine Films.
The production team aims to launch it in 2027.
